IQNA – The final round of Iran’s 40th International Quran Competition was launched in a ceremony in Tehran on Thursday.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad Mehdi Esmaeili and Head of the Awqaf and Charity Affairs Organization Hojat-ol-Islam Seyed Mehdi Khamoushi were among the senior officials taking part in the opening ceremony.

It began with the playing of Iran’s national anthem and then recitation of verses from the Holy Quran by Iranian qari Hamed Alizadeh, the top winner of Malaysia’s 59th international Quran competition.

The final round of Iran’s 40th International Quran Competition is held in the categories of Quran recitation and memorization of the entire Quran in two separate sections for men and women.

It will run through Tuesday, February 20 and the winners will be named and awarded at the closing ceremony on February 21.

Quran memorizers and reciters from 110 countries registered for the competition and after the preliminary round, 69 contestants from 40 countries made it to the finals.

The 8th edition of the International Quran Competition for School Students is also held in Tehran concurrently with the 40th international Quran contest of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
